New works on Cavafy

A landmark publication was unveiled at the Benaki Museum earlier this week. Edited by bibliographer Dimitris Daskalopoulos, «Bibliography of C.P. Cavafy (1886-2000)» was published by the Center for the Greek Language. Speaking at the book launch besides Daskalopoulos were Professor Dimitris Maronitis, the Center for the Greek Language’s President Dimitris Daskalopoulos and Professor Diana Haas. Also, Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos made a brief appearance. For the last 25 years, Daskalopoulos had been collecting works by Cavafy published around the world, literary editions published in the 20th century, as well as interviews, illustrations and photographs. The result of this laborious research was presented to a full house at the Benaki Museum on Tuesday. «Bibliography of C.P. Cavafy (1886-2000)» is the third book on the poet published by the Center for the Greek Language. Previous editions include the multilingual «The Cavafy Way: Twenty Foreign Poems» (1999) and the highly revealing «Talking to Cavafy: An Anthology of Foreign Cavafy-esque Poems» (2000). Both works were edited by Professor Nasos Vagenas. The Center for the Greek Language’s new edition comprises 1,232 pages, including nearly 10,000 entries – pointing to the size and tremendous influence of Cavafy’s oeuvre. Bilingual Evangelos Sachperoglou’s Greek and English edition of 154 poems by Cavafy will be presented tomorrow at the British School at Athens. Speaking about Cavafy’s poetry and the approach to translating it is Professor Roderick Beaton of King’s College London. British School at Athens, 52 Souidias, Kolonaki, tel 210.729.2146/722.9115.
