Argentinean tango group takes the stage in Rendi

Despite what people might have thought, the continuous tango performances are not over yet! After a summer full of flamenco and tango dances, tango, the dance of passion, is back in Athens. Tango Pasion, the dance group that made the world succumb to the charm of Argentinean tango, will perform in Athens along with the renowned Sexteto Mayor Orchestra until November 21. The performances take place on a striking vault-like stage that has been set up at the Alou Fun Park in Rendi. Virtual reality Audiences in Greece may remember Tango Pasion from its superb performances here a few years ago: The group performed in 1997 at the Herod Atticus Theater, at the Athens Concert Hall in 1999 and at the Lycabettus Theater in 2000. It has also performed at the Dassos Theater in Thessaloniki and at the Volos Festival. This year, Tango Pasion will present its latest production, directed by Broadway producer and director Mel Howard, at the Alou Fun Park. The show is divided into two parts: The first part consists of traditional tango choreography, while the second part is full of surprises and original elements, like virtual reality dancers who mingle harmoniously with the couples dancing on stage. The group first included the innovation of adding virtual reality to their show in their 2001-2002 production; it was received with enthusiasm and has become an integral part of their performances since. The dance and music show, choreographed by Hector Zaraspe, is spectacular and lasts about two hours. It is based on Astor Piazzola’s composition «Maria de Buenos Aires,» the story of a woman who, disillusioned with men, rediscovers and renews herself with a new love. The Sexteto Mayor Orchestra, conducted by Jose Libertella and Louis Stazo, will interpret some of the greatest tango hits of the 20th century. The orchestra was awarded a Grammy award earlier this year. Tango Pasion consists of seven pairs of dancers, a singer and the orchestra. In its 10 years of existence, it has appeared on some of the most prestigious stages in the world, including the Berlin Opera, the Theatre Champs Elysees in Paris and the Longacre Theater on Broadway in New York. Shows are held at the Big Top Theater at the Alou Fun Park, Kifissou & Petrou Ralli, for information: tel 210.921.3310.
