A new dance event looks for participants

A new dance institution is in the works in Hania, Crete, organized jointly by the Specs ‘n’ Art cultural management group and the Municipality of Hania. Headed by the multifaceted Greek choreographer and artistic director Haris Mandafounis, the Mediterranean Dance Platform, scheduled for April 15-17 2004, aims at becoming a forum for contemporary dance professionals and dance agents to present and promote new ideas. With a focus on contemporary and classical dance, it is hoped that the institution will foster cultural exchange between Mediterranean dance companies and agents from around the world as well as host conferences on theory. April’s conference, titled «Think-Tank on Creativity,» will feature the participation of choreographers Efva Lilja from Sweden and Rosemary Butcher from the UK, as well as dance critic Katja Werner from Germany’s Dance Europe magazine. The three lectures will be in the form of original research papers, promoting idea exchanges between participants and professionals. Foreign dance companies wishing to participate must apply by December 30 with a recent production featuring three to eight dancers and lasting no more than 75 minutes. Furthermore, applicants are required to submit a full-length video of their work in advance, along with an outline of their concept and a list of contributors accompanied by their curricula vitae. Should an application be accepted, participants are required to send their own technical sound and light rider in advance of their arrival and they must meet the costs of their own travel and promotion held outside the context of the platform. On their part, the organizers will provide accommodation and board for participants and two fully equipped performance spaces, as well as undertake the design of an English-language website, record on video the performance for archival purposes and provide participants with interpreters. Dance companies interested in participating can contact Specs ‘n’ Art for more details and for application forms.
