Mode Plagal concert

Mode Plagal, one of the leading groups of the Greek jazz scene return on stage tomorrow with one sole performance at the capital’s Club 22. Ever since their first appearance on the local music scene in 1990, Mode Plagal have been steadily building a solid career. How do they do it? By mixing all sorts of musical elements and creating their own distinct language of sound. Based on jazz techniques, their work has references to traditional Greek folk music, as well as touches of Byzantium, the Balkans, Africa, funk, groove, rock and blues, among others. The Athens-based «ethnic jazz» ensemble recently collaborated with Nikiforos Metaxas, music director of the Istanbul-based ensemble Bosphorus. Their joint album, «Beyond the Bosphorus,» was an attempt to capture modern-day Istanbul. Prior to the album’s release, both bands had performed together in Turkey, while members of Mode Plagal have studied Byzantine music under Metaxas. Club 22, 22 Vouliagmenis Avenue, tel 210.924.9814. Admission is 12 euros.
