Seferis event at London bookstore

Roderick Beaton, Koraes professor of modern Greek and Byzantine history, language and literature at King’s College London, presented his biography of Nobel laureate George Seferis at Borders bookstore in an event organized by Nick Panayiotou and the Greek Embassy as part of the «Greece in Britain» activities, and attended by Greek Cultural Attache Vana Solomonidou. Louis de Bernieres, author of the best-selling novel «Captain Corelli’s Mandolin,» read some of Seferis’s poems in English translation. Beaton spoke with feeling about Seferis’s life, divided between diplomacy and poetry, and he read some of Seferis’s work in Greek, captivating the youthful audience. The biography – «George Seferis: Waiting for the Angel» – has become a best seller in Greece, in Mika Provata’s translation published by Okeanida.
