‘Moulin Rouge’ in Athens

In just a few days, Athens will enjoy some of the sparkle of Paris’s world-famous Lido Theater as the capital’s Coronet Theater plays host to 17 performances of the show «Moulin Rouge» by German choreographer Sven Gottlicher, from March 19 to April 4. With a background ranging from tap-dancing, jazz and contemporary to classical dance, Gottlicher is a globetrotting talent scout who has picked top artists to perform in his new show, which has only been performed in Germany so far. «Moulin Rouge» will feature dancers and actors from the US and Europe in a colorful amalgam of dance, song, acrobatics and magic tricks. Inspired by the 2001 Baz Luhrmann musical film of the same title, starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, the show also includes classic favorites from the musical plays «Chicago,» «Cabaret» and «La Cage aux Folles,» as well as songs from films, such as «Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend,» «One Day I’ll Fly Away» and «Your Song.» Of the show’s plot, Gottlicher says: «A star, or rather, an eccentric diva, asks a young poet to write songs for her exclusively. He, madly in love with her, decides to write a new show for the Moulin Rouge. This is a show within a show, a performance within a performance. On the one hand, the artists present a musical for the audience, and on the other, they sing and dance as they compose the show being written by the poet during the first performance itself.» The lead role will be performed by Natacza Soozie Boom, a dancer with a long history at the Lido, whose performances include parts in adaptations of well-known musicals such as «Cats,» «Cabaret,» «Evita» and «The Little Shop of Horrors.» In the role of the poet is the USA’s Danny Costello, who has appeared in numerous American productions, such as «West Side Story,» «A Chorus Line,» «Singing in the Rain,» «Gypsy,» «Sweet Charity» and «Kiss Me Kate,» to name a few.
