Top of the charts

Twenty years ago a group of musicians joined forces in Leeds. Besides music, their motive behind the creation of Chumbawamba was political expression. Their first album «Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records,» was an attack on Hollywood charity performances such as Live Aid. In 1997 the band took everybody by surprise by signing with a multinational recording label for their «Tubthumping» album, which subsequently reached the top of the charts in 22 countries selling more than five million copies. Beyond being members of the same band, Chumbawamba are a group of eight friends, together in life and on stage. Besides the aforementioned albums, they have also recorded «Anarchy,» «English Rebel Songs 1381-1914» and «Readymades.» Coming up next month is «Un,» an album mixing dance beat, intelligent tunes, women’s chorals for vocals and rap. This week, Chumbawamba comes to Greece. The band is scheduled to appear in Thessaloniki this Friday (at the Fix Club, 15 28th Octovriou) and in Athens on Saturday (at Gagarin 205 Club, 205 Liossion, Attiki Square).
