Record label showcases young artists

The Mikri Arktos record label has turned its attention to fleshing out bright new talent from among the ranks of aspiring songwriters and performers of so-called entechno music (a more sophisticated form of popular songwriting). For the second time – the first was in 2002 – the label has recently released a CD with the work of its new artists and has also organized two live concerts, at the Alpha Theater, today and tomorrow. In a press conference, the artistic director of Mikri Arktos, Paraskevas Karasoulos, explained that the purpose of this second presentation is «to help bring together the new writers and singers and set the stage for a complete and original proposal in modern Greek music. «Six hundred artists from every corner of Greece, and from abroad as well, sent us samples of their work. We had to listen to some 5,000 songs!» Entechno music, according to Karasoulos, has been finding it increasingly difficult over the years to find a niche in big recording companies in Greece, though he says that «the high quality of some of the samples we received proves that young people today can write meaningful lyrics and powerful melodies in a completely different direction to the predominant trends in the music industry.» The label’s artistic director, a songwriter himself, also noted that it was a pleasure to see that «good Greek music has succeeded in surviving the passage of time, and in keeping its meaning and significance intact through these young artists.» The concerts will present 15 young songwriters and 17 of their original compositions, interpreted by 11 young singers. Alpha Theater, 37 Patission & Stournari. The concerts start at 8.30 p.m.
