‘Last Desk’ earns top honors at ‘Let’s Go to the Movies’

Participating for the first time in the ambitious joint program by the ministries of Culture and Education and organized by the Thessaloniki Film Festival, the schoolchildren of the Northern Aegean made a very good impression. The Mandamadou Senior High School in Lesvos won First Prize in the Fourth Student Film Festival «Let’s Go to the Movies» competition for their film «The Last Desk,» with Fotis Polychronopoulos acting as consultant director. In the film, a group of high school students arranges to meet 10 years after graduation. The reunion day arrives but no one wants to attend, due to old rivalries. Attendance at the festival, which ended recently, was high again this year, while the mood was upbeat, with each school supporting its own filmmakers. While the importance of participation is frequently noted in this kind of festival, it is the competition which gets the adrenaline going. In Attica, the top prize was awarded to the Third Nea Philadelphia Senior High School Miltos Koundouras, followed by the First Perama Senior High School, while Third Prize was shared between the Second Athens Experimental Senior High School and the Special Athens High School. In Thessaloniki, it was the technical high schools which stole the show: Top honors went to the First Technical High School in Polichnis, followed by the Technical School for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired, while the Thessaloniki University Experimental School came third. In New York, the award went to the Aghios Dimitrios High School in Astoria, while special mention was given to the film shot by the Aghios Constantinos and Eleni parish of West Nyak.
