Libraries in a new world

The Goethe Institute is holding an international conference for public libraries in Greece, «Libraries and Lifelong Learning,» May 24-26. The conference, which has attracted 3,000 participants, will present initiatives and best-practice examples from public libraries in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United States, while speakers from Greece will present different approaches to lifelong learning. Former minister Ioannis Varvitsiotis and journalists Nikos Bakounakis and Nikos Xydakis will conduct a public discussion on «Libraries and quality of life – the needs of the public and strategic action.» «It is essential for librarians to exchange their experiences with each other regularly,» Goethe Library Director Brigitte Doellgast told the press yesterday, «so that they can adapt to new media and integrate libraries into modern work and education methods.» «Libraries and Lifelong Learning» is a Goethe Institute initiative, organized with the Union of Greek Librarians, the National Documentation Center, the National Book Center, the National Library of Greece, the Cervantes Institute, the French Institute, the Italian Cultural Institute, the US Information Resource Center and the Information and Documentation Center of the European Commission in Greece, with the support of the Finnish Embassy and under the aegis of the Culture Ministry.
