Jordan’s queen to open fund-raiser; legendary tenor in farewell concert

June 1 will bring with it a crowd of celebrities and events. An exhibition from the Jordan River Foundation opens at the Museum of Cycladic Art on Tuesday, under the aegis of Queen Rania and organized by Unesco Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyianni, president of the Foundation for the Child and Family. Select examples of textiles and traditional handicrafts will be on sale for three days at symbolic prices in the museum’s new wing in the Stathatos Mansion for three days, and the proceeds will go to the Jordan River Foundation. That evening Queen Rania will attend a concert by Luciano Pavarotti at the Herod Atticus Theater. The cost of the event is being met by 33 sponsors and the proceeds will go to the Elpida Association of Friends of Children with Cancer, also headed by Vardinoyianni, to help build an oncological hospital for children. There will be a fund-raising dinner afterward. Doctors, chefs and his new wife will be there for the famed tenor, whose concert is one in a series of farewell appearances in world capitals «before he retires from the stage,» as he says.
