Films tracing Athenian life shown in Paris

he character of contemporary Athens is the focus of a film tribute currently on in Paris, jointly organized by the Forum des Images, the Greek Film Center and the Greek Embassy, and running until June 27. Real life The tribute comprises 56 fictional and documentary films that reveal the lesser-known face of the Greek capital; the face away from the tourist sights and cultural heritage spots. The films aim to show Athens as it really is today: a city that in itself piques the interest of locals and foreigners. Among the films featured in the program are, for example, Michael Cacoyannis’s «Stella» and «Windfall in Athens» (Kyriakatiko Xypnima), as well as scenes of Athens shot by cinematographers from the French production companies Gaumont and Pathe from 1896 to 1960. The films span a century of the Greek capital’s history with titles by famed Greek filmmakers, selected by the Forum des Images, which also subtitled the films in French and published a bilingual catalog. Furthermore, the tribute will be framed by a series of parallel events, such as a focus on the music for cinema of Mikis Theodorakis, a focus on Irene Papas, a lecture by Giorgos Prevelakis on the «Political History of Athens,» a round-table discussion of architecture in Athens in the runup to the Olympic Games and, among others, a screening on August 13 – the day the Games begin – of Christian Boisse and Alain Vernon’s «From Olympia to Athens.»
