Plisson to meet with local artists

Greek photographers are being offered a rare opportunity this week to have a master of the art appraise their work and put it forth for an exhibition, as esteemed French photographer Philip Plisson will be meeting with local artists at the French Institute of Athens (IFA) on Thursday. The initiative has been organized jointly by the IFA and the Municipality of Athens in an effort to support young photographers. It is also being launched in the context of the publication, in French, of Plisson’s stunning new coffee-table book «Athenes entre ciel et mer» (Athens Between Sky and Sea), which contains scenes from life in the Greek capital. Starting at 7 p.m., Plisson will meet with individual artists, view their portfolios of work and discuss any questions they may have. At the end of the session, he will announce which artist he has selected, and, at some later date, the artist will have the chance to hold a monthlong exhibition at the recently renovated Paris-Athenes bistro of the IFA. After the event on Thursday, starting at 9 p.m., Plisson will show a series of slides (accompanied by music) with his photographs of the Queen Mary ocean liner, the Americas Cup and a selection of photographs of Athens. He will subsequently be available to sign copies of his book and meet with schoolchildren to discuss the manner in which he selected the sites he photographed for his picture album. The French Institute of Athens is located at 31 Sina, Kolonaki, tel 210.339.8600. Photographers wishing to get an audience with Plisson need to call tel 210.339.8633 by noon on Thursday at the latest.
