Nana Mouskouri starts her farewell tour on her 70th birthday in Athens

A birthday and a farewell in song. Following the example of Luciano Pavarotti, who has been making a farewell tour of the world for two years, the other musical phenomenon of our time, Nana Mouskouri, who became Manos Hadzidakis’s favorite singer in 1959 when she won the Greek State Radio Foundation’s first prize with his song «Kapou yparchei i agapi mou,» celebrated her 70th birthday with two concerts at the Athens Concert Hall. She started her farewell tour in Athens, as she explained to packed audiences on both nights, and will go on to all the European places that have given her international recognition as well as a vast collection of recordings in English and French as well as Greek. Let us hope she does not make her final bow from the stage. Mouskouri still has much to offer – her audiences went wild in Athens. Lenou, her daughter from her marriage to musician Giorgos Petsilas, sang with her, as did Sakis Rouvas, in a special appearance. Rouvas may perform in other concerts with Mouskouri abroad. For him, it will mark the beginning of an international career, following his third place in the Eurovison song contest. As for Mouskouri, turning to jazz, her first great love, will keep her close to music for some time to come.
