Well-deserved success

Writer Panos Karnezis deserves all the success he has garnered. A Greek writer who pens in English and translates his books into Greek himself, Karnezis is based in London and is enjoying a steadily rising career. His first novel, «The Maze,» published in Greek by Ellinika Grammata, is about the historical events in 1922 and the expulsion of Greeks from Asia Minor. The English publication was received very warmly and Karnezis has been short-listed for the Whitbread First Novel Award, the fate of which will be decided on Thursday. «The Maze» is one of the few Greek novels to have made an impact outside Greece, probably because it was written directly in English by a writer whose first collection of short stories, «Little Infamies,» was praised by international critics.
