Three good reasons to go to the theater

The new theater season in Athens is going strong, with a string of new performances opening on the capital’s stages. For the second time, the National Theater’s Experimental Stage is presenting Marianna Kalbari’s zany «Biomagic,» directed by Dimitris Lignadis and starring Ioanna Mavrea and Yiannis Haritodiplomenos. What is different in this year’s production – which premiered yesterday – is that it will be performed in the bar of the National Theater’s main venue on Aghiou Constantinou Street, making it a more interactive experience than usual. Another production opening soon, at the Schedia Theater on Friday, is Jose Rivera’s «Each Day Dies With Sleep,» directed by Vassilis Kanellopoulos and starring Eleni Makri. In a note on the play, the influential Puerto Rico-born American playwright, who studied with Garbriel Garcia Marquez at the Sundance Institute, says, «I wanted to discuss Latino culture in a small town, semi-rural environment – with an emphasis on family, sexuality, spirituality, and the occult.» Meanwhile, a soon-to-be-announced opening date is expected from the Theatro tis Imeras, which will be staging Tennessee Williams’s «The Roman Spring of Mrs Stone,» in which the recently widowed protagonist settles in Rome, where she embarks on an affair with a high-maintenance young man.
