Chiot flavors arrive at the Metropolitan

The flavors of Chios – led by the island’s shining star, the mastic – go on display and on the table at the Metropolitan Hotel next week. Two exceptional culinary evenings, traditionally known as the «Chiot Nights,» await diners and visitors on January 28 and 29 at the hotel’s Corfu Hall. Magic tears Widely used as a spice, but also in pharmaceuticals – it was discovered recently that when used in small doses it may cure stomach ulcers, for instance – dental hygiene products and cosmetics, the aromatic resin of the mastic tree grows exclusively on the southern part of the island. It is also used to produce liqueur as well as mastic-flavored ouzo. Special menu At the Metropolitan, the two-day special menu offers a choice of starters, main courses and desserts. These include grilled sardines, octopus, Chiot meatballs, meatballs with homemade pasta, lamb fricassee, mastic-flavored creme brulee and walnut pie with mastic ice-cream. Accompanying the menu is wine from the village of Mesta, while a five-member band and folk dancing troupe from the same village will set the dining and dancing mood. A collection of spirits from Tetteris Distillers as well as mastic products selected by the Chios Mastiha Growers Association (owners of the developing chain of Mastihashops) will also be on display. «Chiot Nights,» at the Metropolitan Hotel, 385 Syngrou Avenue, tel 210.947.1000, on January 28 and 29.
