Concert series organized by music website

One of Greece’s few reliable classical music websites, classicalmusic.gr, is now venturing on its first tentative steps outside the Internet: It is organizing a series of concerts at the New Wing of the Benaki Museum on Pireos Street, which will start on Wednesday. The opening concert, titled «When you Laugh and When you Talk,» features an interesting program which will bring together celebrated foreign and Greek composers – including, on the Greek side, Nikolaos Mantzaros, Nikolaos Lavdas and Giorgos Constantinidis. The concert features soprano Ioulia Troussa and pianist Efi Papathomaidi accompanied by the Nikolaos Matzaros chamber ensemble. From Monteverdi to Hadjidakis Five more concerts will follow: On February 28, the Kelados ensemble of the Thomas Tamvakos Archive of Greek Composers will interpret works by Brahms, Prokofiev, Mahler, Sati, Dragatakis, Harizanos, Nikolaou and others. The «Ballads of Pireos Street, from Claudio Monteverdi to Manos Hadjidakis,» which will follow on March 9, promises to be a journey through the history of songs, or rather «a return to songs’ essence.» The art of the fugue, the basis of a series of monumental compositions published by Bach despite the huge cost, will be the focus of organist Joris Lejeune and harpsichordist Gerassimos-Andreas Hoidas on April 6, who will interpret this work with the instruments for which it was written for the first time in Greece. The May 16 concert, «Baroque Music from the European Courts,» will be dedicated to Baroque music. The concert series will end on May 29, with a Sunday morning filled with chamber music. The New Wing of the Benaki Museum is situated at 138 Pireos & Andronikou, Gazi, tel 210.345.3111-3.
