Broadway crowd-puller in town

Following the successful debut made by the legendary musical «Cats,» which toured Athens last month, the capital is set to welcome yet another highly popular musical production, «Chicago,» which opens this Thursday. «Chicago» will run at Athinon Arena, a new complex situated on Pireos Street. Popular vocalists George Dalaras and Antonis Remos inaugurated the venue last year. True story «Chicago,» a Broadway sensation which takes the audience back to the 1920s, is based on the real-life 1924 murder trials of two women, who were eventually acquitted. In the musical, the two women find themselves in the same prison awaiting their respective trials, which are handled by the same lawyer. They compete against each other as they both crave fame in the world of show business. After various plot twists and numerous breathtaking songs and dance acts, the two leading ladies team up for a striking finale. Directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and featuring music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, the production was first staged in Broadway in 1975 (Fosse, Broadway’s leading choreographer and director, was also behind hits like «Cabaret» and «All that Jazz»). Over the years, «Chicago» has received numerous awards, including six Tony awards in 1997. Those not lucky enough to catch the musical at a theater stage around the world certainly got a taste from the successful film version of «Chicago,» which hit the cinemas in 2002 under the direction of Rob Marshall and featured Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger. The film won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Art Direction. Athinon Arena, 166 Pireos.
