Acclaimed vocalists join forces on stage

Summer will officially begin with a special musical event at the Herod Atticus Theater tomorrow and Wednesday. Singers George Dalaras of Greece and Dulce Pontes from Portugal will join forces for two concerts titled «The Sea and Us.» The concerts are part of the 2005 Athens Festival and proceeds will go to Elpida, the Association of Friends of Children with Cancer. The two acclaimed singers will be joined by pianist Stefanos Korkolis. Dalaras and Pontes also shared the stage at the ancient theater last year; their chemistry turned out to be so strong that it led to another collaboration. Hence, fados will meet rebetika, blues and flamenco, creating a musical bridge between the eastern and western Mediterranean. As Dalaras revealed at a recent press conference, Stefanos Korkolis was the link that brought the two vocalists together. Composer and pianist Korkolis is a close collaborator of Pontes’s and has worked a lot with her over the past few years. The two concerts will be a journey through different kinds of music and songs by great composers: from Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis to Thanos Mikroutsikos, Stavros Xarhakos, Goran Bregovic and Portugal’s musical tradition. The Greek Radio & Television (ERT) Symphony Orchestra will also participate, under the baton of Loukas Karytinos, as will a folk orchestra, with distinguished soloists. Herod Atticus Theater, Dionysiou Areopagitou. Tickets are available at the Hellenic Festival box office (39 Panepistimiou, tel 210.928.2900) and from the theater box office.
