Daniel Day-Lewis back in capital for premiere, charity

Acclaimed actor Daniel Day-Lewis is turning into a regular Athens visitor, always for charity reasons. Following his appearance at the Greek premiere of «Gangs of New York,» the Oscar-winning British actor will come to Athens once more in September to attend the Athens Premiere Nights Film Festival. As was the case last time, Day-Lewis will attend the premiere of his latest film. The event’s proceeds will go to Greece’s Spastics Society. «The Ballad of Jack and Rose,» in which Day-Lewis plays a leading role, is directed by his wife, Rebecca Miller. It’s the first time the pair have worked together, even though the couple first met on a movie set almost 10 years ago. In 1996, Day-Lewis was filming «The Crucible,» written by renowned author Arthur Miller, and met Miller’s daughter, Rebecca. They got married later that year and now have two sons. They spend most of their time in Ireland, the home country of the 48-year-old Lewis, whose father was Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis. «The Ballad of Jack and Rose» is a family drama set in the mid-1980s. Jack lives isolated on an island along with his 16-year-old daughter, Rose, deliberately excluding her from contact with the outside world. Jack also suffers from an incurable disease. As Rose faces the tumultuous transition from childhood to womanhood, Jack must answer endless questions that upset the lives of both father and daughter. When Jack invites his girlfriend Kathleen to live in their house along with her two sons, Rose feels betrayed and her reaction is extreme. The film will open at Greek cinemas at the end of September. The 11th Premiere Nights Assos International Film Festival – which will take place September 16 to 25 at the Attikon, Apollon Filmcenter, Danaos 1 and Danaos 2 cinemas – will mostly consist of American independent films. Many of those productions were screened at the Cannes Film Festival, including «Down in the Valley,» featuring Edward Norton, «The King,» with Gael Garcia Bernal, and Jim Jarmusch’s «Broken Flowers,» which won the Grand Prix and stars Bill Murray, Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange and Tilda Swinton. The documentary «George Michael: A Different Story,» where the artist reveals aspects of his eventful life, stands out in the music section.
