Vanessa Mae: Classical violin with pop twist

Star violinist Vanessa Mae comes to Greece this week with a concert scheduled to take place at Thessaloniki’s Gis Theater tomorrow. The much-anticipated performance is part of this year’s Demetria Festival and is organized by the Mylos cultural complex and the Thessaloniki Municipality. Dubbed as one of 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine and known as the «The Queen of Violin» within the global music industry, Mae is a truly gifted musician and performer. Born in Singapore in 1978, the artist made her European debut at the age of 10 accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. By the time she turned 13, she had recorded three albums, becoming the youngest soloist ever to record well-known works by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. In 1995, Mae took a musical step forward with the recording of «The Violin Player.» On that album, the violinist reworked classical musical pieces giving them a pop twist. This winning combination of old and new earned Mae an increasingly broader audience. With more than 8 million copies of her albums sold worldwide and more than 40 awards, today the artist enjoys a global following from all sides of the musical spectrum. Mae’s most recent album, «Choreography,» was released by Sony Classical last year. On the album, which is the sixth of her career, the artist collaborated with prominent contemporary composers, including Vangelis Papathanassiou, Bill Whelan and Tolga Kashif. The result was an album featuring works inspired by music from around the world. Gis Theater, Damari Triandrias, Thessaloniki, tel 2310.206730. Show starts at 9 p.m. For ticket information visit the site www.mylos.gr.
