ACS celebrates 60 years with gala musical revue

A musical revue, in English, titled «Freedom Isn’t Free» is being presented by the Athens Semi-Classical Singers and Players at a gala fund-raising dinner-theater performance on behalf of the American Community Schools (ACS), being held tomorrow at 8.30 p.m. at the Hellenic-American Arts Center in Halandri. «Freedom Isn’t Free» is an original two-act musical theater production, combining songs and scenes from over a dozen American and English musicals highlighting the theme of revolution, such as songs from «Showboat,» «Fiddler on the Roof,» «Man of La Mancha,» «Les Miserables,» and «HMS Pinafore,» as well as a large number of Greek and American folk songs and African American spirituals. The production is directed and produced by Nicholas J. Greanias, American consul at the US Embassy in Athens, who also authored the show. The troupe is an Athens-based group of mostly Greek and American singers and actors, together now for about two years. They have performed at a wide variety of local events and locales, including Athens Mayor Dora Bakoyannis’s programs at Christmas and at the Olympic Games, in Syntagma Square and other public spaces. Several members of the group are former professional singers and actors and have sung on opera and theater stages around the world, as well as on Broadway and in London’s West End theaters. The performance also comes as the kickoff to celebrations for ACS’s 60 years in the field of education in Greece, its presence enriched by the state-of-the-art theater and athletic facilities of the Hellenic-American Arts Center. The Hellenic-American Arts Center of Halandri is a not-for-profit association that is part of ACS, aimed at providing a new forum for the performing and visual arts. The Arts Center is particularly dedicated to providing these opportunities for the students of ACS, as well as providing an on-site performance venue, hosting artists from abroad and talent from within the school. Tickets for the gala event tomorrow are priced at 50 euros for the general public and 25 euros for students. The price includes a full buffet dinner after the show, as well as wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee and dessert. The artists of the Semi-Classical Singers and Players are performing completely gratis, as their donation to ACS. All proceeds from this event will go to ACS.
