Conference and book fair
A two-day conference commemorating the 100 years since the birth of Giorgos Theotokas has attracted distinguished scholars from Greece and abroad. «Giorgos Theotokas: A free spirit between literature, theater and politics,» organized by the National Book Center of Greece under the aegis of the Culture Ministry, starts tomorrow at the Stoa tou Vivliou book arcade (5 Pesmazoglou & Stadiou). Greek books at Liber Greek books and writers will be in the limelight next week in Madrid, where Greece is the guest of honor at the 2005 Liber Book Fair. A large contingent of 37 publishers and 15 writers are participating in Liber in an endeavor to expand the Greek presence in the large Spanish-language market and beyond. In addition to Spain and the Latin American countries, other participants include Canada, France, Poland, Portugal, Egypt and Morocco. Liber runs from October 12 to 15, with the official opening by Queen Sofia of Spain on October 11. The Greek stand opens at noon on October 13 with a reception. The literary events start earlier, on October 10, in Barcelona, with presentations by authors Evgenia Fakinou, Haris Vlavianos, Thanassis Valtinos and Andrea Staikos. The events continue in Madrid. The Greek presence is a collective effort jointly organized under the aegis of the Culture Ministry by the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI), the Panhellenic Federation of Publishers and Booksellers (POEB) the European Translation Center (EKEMEL) and the Hellenic Society of Authors.
