Almunia speaks on European social model over Hilton dinner

As the wise old saying has it: If you want to make someone your friend, invite them to dine with you. The shared experience lightens the atmosphere and puts everyone in a better mood. Ever since antiquity, speeches have been a part of formal meals, and it was to such an occasion that Economy and Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis invited European Union Monetary Affairs Commissioner Joaquin Almunia as guest of honor at the Hilton on Wednesday. Alumnia spoke on «The Future of the European Social Model,» with remarks on the Greek economy to a select group of ministers, diplomats and entrepreneurs. Among those present were Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas, former minister Vasso Papandreou, Spanish Ambassador Juan Ramon Salazar, Japanese Ambassador Toshio Mochizuki, US Ambassador Charles Ries, Eurobank Managing Director Nikos Nanopoulos and National Bank Managing Director Yiannis Pechlivanidis. It was pleasant occasion and a serious one – a model dinner.
