Charlotte Church, the voice of an angel, at the Athens Concert Hall

The American Community Schools of Athens (ACS Athens) and the American Hellenic Arts Center of Halandri Association are adding yet another exciting concert to the long list of events they are organizing in order to raise funds for the construction of the a new center for performing arts. The 15-year-old soprano Charlotte Church, whose previous scheduled performance in Athens was canceled following the September 11 attacks, will appear at the Athens Concert Hall on March 8. Named as one of the Billboard’s Top 10 bestselling female vocalists in the US for the year 2000, Church is the youngest-ever artist to have a Number 1 album in the UK and has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Placido Domingo. Born in Llandaff, Cardiff, the 15-year-old Welsh vocalist is a natural-born performer: At the age of three and a half, she refused to leave the stage after singing «Ghostbusters» at a holiday camp. Five years later she was making a name for herself in karaoke competitions. Entering a talent contest proved pivotal to her career: After performing «Pie Jesu» over the phone, the producers invited her to appear on the show, which led to more performances, leading to concerts at the London Palladium, the Royal Albert Hall and Cardiff Arms Park. In 1998 at the tender age of 12, the young soprano released her first album, «Voice of an Angel.» An overnight success, it sold millions around the globe, turning Church into a superstar. It was followed by the «Dream a Dream» album. During the Athens Concert Hall concert, Church is scheduled to perform songs from «Enchantment,» her most recent album, where her sublime and flexible voice moves from classical to Celtic to contemporary tunes. Celebrated songs like «Tonight» from «West Side Story» and John Lennon’s «Imagine» will mix with lesser-known tunes such as the traditional «Carrickfergus.» Church will be accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT and a choir, led by Arnie Roth and Andreas Pylarinos.More information about Charlotte Church’s show from Poly Chryssanthakopoulos, ACS Athens, tel 010.639.0537.
