Volos festival celebrates with mime, dance and theater

As the Volos International Musical Theater Festival celebrates its first decade this year, the exciting program that organizers have come up with is nothing short of festive. Old and new friends from Greece and abroad will gather in Volos starting tonight (events runs to January 6) in order to participate in a festival that combines pantomime, dance and theater. The event is organized by the city’s Musical Theater Center, under the creative direction of Dimitris Marangopoulos. Tango The curtain will be raised tonight with an evening featuring the Quinteto Tangarto performing Argentinean tango, followed by «A Journey to Brazil,» a production by Daniil Harms and the Regional Peripheral Theater of the Northern Aegean, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. «Love-Magic-Death» is the title of a production scheduled for next Monday, December 19, at the Palaia Elektriki Theater. The performance is a combination of Greek texts, a projection of images and live interpretations of works by great composers, such as Couperin, Rameau, Debussy, Faure, Michailidis, Mouhayer, Terzakis and Hadjidakis, among others. The idea for this show belongs to Zoe Samsarelou, who was responsible for the selection of texts and music direction. «A Long Nostalgic Song» is the title of a modern cabaret, written and directed by Georgia Mavragani. The production, based on music, musical arrangements and live electronics by Theodoris Zioutos, will be performed on December 21. British dance troupe Momentum is next, with a production titled «Memento Mori.» The work is based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and will be performed in Volos on December 22 and 23. Following a short break for Christmas, Family Voices will present «Musical Subversions» on Boxing Day. Comprising solos, duets, trios and ensembles from well-known operas, this performance features singers Natasha Angelopoulou, Effi Minakouli and Stamatis Beris, among others. Popular Stamatis Kraounakis and his Spira-Spira troupe will perform their entertaining musical show «Bibero» on December 28, while the Mitsi Laoudi Dance School will interpret «Carmen» in collaboration with Stavroula Georgopapadakou’s Duende dance company on December 30. Rap, jazz and rock will usher in the New Year as Le Quator, a traditionally classical music quartet, will offer an alternative performance based on dance, music and song on January 3 and 4. The festival comes to an end with Tricicle, a troupe featuring comedians in the tradition of Buster Keaton and the Marx brothers. In Volos, Tricicle will present «Sit,» a highly original show, on January 5 and 6.
