Dignitaries attend event for end to human trafficking

Two queens – Silvia of Sweden and Sabeeka, wife of the king of Bahrain – Egypt’s first lady Suzanne Mubarak, founder of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyianni, who is a board member of the movement, took part in the Round Table for the Business Community against Human Trafficking, with representatives of 15 countries and former UN secretary-general Boutros Boutros Ghali on January 23 at the Zappeion Hall. Messages of support were sent by singer Ricky Martin, also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, and actor Richard Gere. In attendance were composer and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Jean Michel Jarre, singer Nana Mouskouri, also a UNESCO goodwill ambassador, actor Lakis Lazopoulos and singer Sakis Rouvas. At the gala held that evening for 1,000 people (tickets at 300 euros each) the guests were entertained by the Gypsy Kings. Among the officials present were Justice Minister Anastassis Papaligouras, Alternate Culture Minister Fani Palli-Petralia, Education Minister Marietta Yiannakou, Deputy Foreign Minister Panayiotis Skandalakis, US Ambassador in Athens Charles Ries, British Ambassador Simon Gass and French Ambassador Bruno Delaye.
