Modern Latvian art is the theme at the Hellenic American Union

The Hellenic American Union and the Forum – European Cultural Exchanges are organizing a series of events focusing on the Latvian art scene, beginning with a lecture today at 3.30 p.m. on «Getting to Know Europe: Modern Art in Latvia.» The panel consists of Helena Demakova (minister of culture of Latvia, art historian), Denis Zacharopoulos (art historian, curator, artistic director of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art), Mara Traumane (art critic, curator), Eriks Bozis (artist), Gints Gabrans (artist), Katrina Neiburga (artist) and Kaspars Podnieks (artist). Also today, at 8.30 p.m., the HAU will open the exhibitions «Suspense: The Rituals Gone Wrong,» in which artists Bozis, Gabrans, Neiburga and Podnieks address the distortion of traditional symbols, among other issues, and «Blinks. Projected Visions – Latvia,» which is a display of video art by Arnis Balcus, Kristine Briede, Ieva Jerohina, Peteris Kimelis, Daiga Kruze, Elina Lihaceva, Neiburga, Reinis Petersons, Martins Ratniks and Kriss Salmanis. The two shows were designed and presented for the first time in Strasbourg by Apollonia / European Art Exchanges as one project under the title «Ettonante Lettonie,» within the context of a French government presentation of Latvia.
