Vyronas all set to celebrate traditional Greek folk music

Fans of traditional Greek folk music will have the opportunity to enjoy some of their all-time favorites, sung by skillful vocalists, at a two-day celebration of the Greek musical tradition this week. The music feast is titled «The Salt of the Earth» after the radio show of the same title (To alati tis gis) which Lambros Liavas has been hosting for 25 years. It will take place tonight and tomorrow, with the participation of distinguished interpreters such as Domna Samiou, Chronis Aidonidis, Savina Yannatou and Haris Alexiou. The concerts will feature Greek folk music and dances from all over Greece, Asia Minor, Pontus and the Greek-speaking villages of southern Italy, with more than 100 musicians and dancers. Tonight, Samiou and Aidonidis, the much-loved singers and masters of the Greek folk tradition, will join forces with vocalist Savina Yannatou, clarinetist Petroloukas Halkias, duo Nikos and Yiassemi Saragouda, violinist Stathis Koukoularis and other musicians. The show will also feature Dimitris Kotsikas’s Kozani Brass Ensemble and dance ensembles from the Society of Pontic Greeks and the Lyceum of Greek Women. On the second day, tomorrow, veteran singer Alexiou will take the lead, joined by various music and dance ensembles, such as Arakne Mediterranea and Glendistades. Alexiou, better known for singing Greek entechno songs, has a long history in Greek folk music. She paid tribute to the Greek musical tradition at the very beginnings of Liavas’s radio show in 1981 and recorded «Tsilika,» an album with rebetiko and songs from Asia Minor, in 1983. Shows start at 9 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Vyronas Festival box office at Syntagma Square, at the theater box office, at Metropolis music stores and at the Vyronas Town Hall (32-36 Karaoli & Dimitriou) and Cultural Center (Kyprou & Evangelikis Scholis).
