Comic twist on ballet

Ticket sales for the four performances of the Ballet Trocadero de Monte Carlo at Athens’s Athinon Arena, scheduled for September 4 to 7, began two days ago. The company, which features an all-male cast, specializes in international classic works from «Swan Lake» to «Paquita,» enriched with hilarious backstage sketches. It is described as «an old-fashioned Russian ballet, full of capricious ballerinas, inflated egos and the necessary glamour that all divas have.» The ensemble does not turn dance into a parody. Some of the dancers may resemble basketball players because of their height (they are taller than 1.90 meters, or about 6 feet, 2 inches), but their movements are precise. Priority is given to traditional ballet, although the comic element lurks everywhere. The Trocks, as they are jokingly called, were founded in 1974 by ballet fans who wanted to present a more humorous aspect of the traditional dance. The production they will bring to Athens was first staged as a midnight Broadway show and received rave reviews. Tickets, prices of which range from 30 and 50 euros, are available at the Athinon Arena box office (166 Pireos), Ticket Shop (tel 211.955.9900) and at Virgin music stores.
