Lorca farce travels in Greece

Unsuitable and unrequited love, the love of an old man for a young woman, is what Federico Garcia Lorca’s «The Love of Don Perlimplin with Belisa in her Garden» is about. The play opened yesterday in the western Greek city of Agrinio and is a production of the local Regional Municipal Theater. The love farce, which is based on a Spanish folk fairy tale, stars Aris Lembessopoulos and Lena Papaligoura. The production uses the translation of Nikos Gatsos, the only translation of the play that has ever been used in Greek theater. Directed by Theodoris Gonis, the play features music by Giorgos Andreou, which is described as a «discussion» of Manos Hadjidakis’s composition «Magnus Eroticus.» The sets and costumes were designed by Alexia Theodoraki, the lights are by Dimos Avdeliodis and Katerina Papadimitriou was movement coach. The production further features actors Keti Rovirou, Danae Tzima, Dorina Theoharidou and Artemis Flessa. It will next go on stage at Athens’s Rematia Theater in Halandri on July 31; the play will then travel around Greece on its summer tour.
