A comic start for Nikaia’s annual fest

Cultural Summer 2006, the festival organized by the Municipality of Nikaia in Piraeus, begins on Tuesday with the Greek National Theater production of Aristophanes’ comedy «Thesmophoriazusae.» The events will run to the end of September at the Katrakeio Theater, the Municipal Garden Theater and the Michaniki Kalliergeia Arts Complex. «Thesmophoriazusae,» which pokes fun at tragic poet Euripides’ alleged misogyny, is a National Theater production directed by Sotiris Hadzakis and starring Giorgos Armenis, Alexandros Mylonas, Vassilis Haralambopoulos and Vangelis Hadzinikolaou. August events will end with a concert by composer and guitarist Notis Mavroudis, on the 30th, followed by a performance by the Baikal dance theater, on September 2, which will be followed by Despina Hadziandreou and Constantinos Stavridis’s musical performance «A Musical Journey Around a Bright Star,» the next day. Lydia Koniordou’s take on Aeschylus’ «Persians,» a tragedy about the Persian Wars in the 5th century BC, will go on stage on September 6; the National Theater production stars Koniordou and Christos Loulis. A piano recital by Constantinos Valianatos will be held on September 7 and Shakespeare’s «Comedy of Errors,» directed by Yiannis Karahissaridis, will be performed on September 10. The program will end with four music soirees: the Dromos bouzouki ensemble will play a folk concert on September 12 and then George Dalaras will follow suit on September 18. Christos Leontis will give a concert dedicated to composer Manos Loizos on September 20 and popular Greek-Cypriot pop star Michalis Hadziyiannis will perform September 24.
