Book fair at foot of Acropolis commemorates Odysseas Elytis

The 35th Greek publishers’ book fair is dedicated to Odysseas Elytis, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death. From September 15 to October 17, more than 350 publishers will display their wares along the pedestrian zone on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street at the foot of the Acropolis. Events in honor of Elytis include a concert at the Herod Atticus Theater on September 30 featuring his poems set to music and with proceeds going to the Elpida Association of Friends of Children with Cancer. Costas Makedonas, Maria Dimitriadi, Yiannis Koutras, Afroditi Manou and Sotiria Leonardou will sing and Minas Hadzisavvas and Karyofyllia Karabeti will recite poems by Elytis. A special stand will showcase the works of the poet from his publishers Ikaros and Ypsilon. And the film «Tribute to Odysseas Elytis» will be screened at the fair’s events venue on Dionysiou Areopagitou. Two discussions will be held at the Acropolis Study Center at 2-4 Makriyianni Street. On September 20 at 9 p.m., Ioulita Ilioupoulou, Costas Georgousopoulos, Christos Yiannaras and David Connolly will explore «Odysseas Elytis and the European Dimension of his Poetics.» On September 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., Athina Schina, Nanos Valaoritis, Yiannis Kontos, Dimitris Mytaras, Sotiris Sorogas and Alekos Fassianos will discuss «Elytis through the Eyes of Poets and Painters.» Once again the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI) will have storytelling events for children. The storytellers will entertain children with fairy stories on the steps of the Herod Atticus Theater on September 23, 24 and 30, at 7 p.m. Greek President Karolos Papoulias will officially open the fair, run by the League of Book Publishers (SEKB), on Saturday at 8 p.m.
