A dance triptych inspired by the music of Mozart

Celebrating the Year of Mozart, a global series of events being held on the 250th anniversary of the great composer’s birth, the National Theater of Northern Greece (NTNG) Dance Theater presents the «Mozart Triptych,» a new production that will open at the Macedonian Studies Center in Thessaloniki on September 23 and run to October 1. Four choreographers from three different cities (Paris, Thessaloniki and Athens) have created three dances combining the techniques of classical and modern dance, dance theater and improvisation to create steps and movements based on Mozart’s scores. Sheryl Grisset has created «Pluie de notes» (Rain of Notes), which is inspired by the great composer’s adagio-allegro from the Sonata for Violin and Piano in G, KV 379, and the Tempo di Menuetto from the Sonata for violin and piano in E minor, KV 304. «These comprise the musical canvas which depicts moments from a simple love affair between a man and a woman,» says the choreographer in a press note. «In a poetic and abstract way, the choreography follows the rhythm and moods dictated by the music and the sound of rain.» «Be Be Bomb» is the second choreography in the triptych, by Nikoletta Xenariou and Sofia Mavragani, in which the two artists address women’s struggle for acceptance by applying external cosmetic changes to themselves. «The female of the human species,» note the choreographers, «dreams of a different world, where the earth is round and the night comes in perfect, off-key French. At least two builders of dance propose calm.» Yiannis Bagourdis’s «Emergency Exit,» according to the artist himself, does not relate any story, but addresses man’s need to be free of everything that constrains him. Dancing in the performances are Polly Vikou, Fania Grigoriou, Sofia Kalpenidou, Panayiotis Kontonis, Vassiliki Lykoura, Yiannis Martos, Elena Sgouramani, Ilias Tsakonas, Jonas Furrer and Marlen Verschuuren.
