Screenings of Thessaloniki digital film festival to take place in Athens

A first attempt was made with an experimental, digital platform held as part of the Thessaloniki Film Festival in 2005. Then last November the First Digital Film Festival, titled DigitalWave, took place in Thessaloniki, also as part of the city’s film festival. DigitalWave now travels to Athens and will be held Thursday to January 17 at the Microcosmos cinema on Syngrou Avenue, in collaboration with the Greek Film Center. DigitalWave features movies filmed entirely on a digital format. The first prize went to Evangelos Yiovanis’s «Land of Nod,» while the judges gave equal praise to Giorgos Loukakos and Madeleine Aktypi’s «Alpha,» Nikos Alevras’s «Erimos ke Monos Gia na Mou Figei o Ponos,» Giorgos Axeherlidis’s «Summer Country Dreams» and Nikos Pomonis’s «A Pink Safety Pin.» «Summer Country Dreams» also received the audience prize. Athens’s DigitalWave will open with Joseph Hepp’s «The Adventures of Villar» (1924) and Achilleas Madras’s «The Magician of Athens» (1931), in copies restored by the Greek Film Library and accompanied by live, electronic music by composer and producer Peekay Tayloh. Apart from the 11 films that took part in the DigitalWave competition section, Costas Sfikas’s «Metamorphosis» will also be screened this coming Sunday, January 14, as a tribute to one of the first Greek filmmakers who experimented with new media.
