THANOS MIKROUTSIKOS & ALKIS ALKAIOS

‘Yperocha monachi’ The album «Embargo,» released 24 years ago, was composer Thanos Mikroutsikos’s first collaboration with lyricist Alkis Alkaios. The two meet again for «Yperocha Monachi,» featuring 13 songs sung mostly by «laiko» (popular Greek) mainstay Manolis Mitsias. The singer’s style merges with the rock-inclined vocal delivery of Christos Thivaios on two tracks. Alkaios’s poetic lyrics have, quite glaringly, the upper hand in this project. This album could prompt some criticism for carrying melodies that somehow remind listeners of older works. But I won’t subscribe to that. I find the arrival of this CD satisfying, especially after last year’s deluge of shallow and mindless sing-along releases. This is a clear attempt at awakening lonely souls.
