Shaking genres, stirring styles, Pink Martini return to Greece with new album
Pink Martini are always a favorite for the feel-good atmosphere they create, both on their recorded work and at their live gigs. The suave ensemble is coming back to Greece tomorrow with songs from a new album – «Hey Eugene!» – to play a mixture of new work and older hits at the Iera Odos venue in central Athens. The concert will certainly bring a summertime air to the city, with classic Cuban rhythms rubbing shoulders with soundtrack classics, jazz melodies with hints of retro and lounge, legendary French ballads and a tasty mix of other sounds spanning the globe and the eras. The Portland, Oregon-based band first burst onto the music scene at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival and into people’s homes with the 2000 album «Sympathique.» The next album, «Hang on Little Tomato,» released in 2004, kept its audience going and «Hey Eugene!» is scheduled to hit stores on May 15. Perhaps the band is anxious to get a vibe on their new work from the country that gave them a gold record for sales (15,000 copies). Always looking for new sounds to recreate or older sources to tap into, whether to present as covers or to incorporate into original songs, Pink Martini are the definitive all-rounders, with a little bit of something for everyone.
