Works of Greek artists for sale in forthcoming Vergos auction
An auction on Greek painting that will be held on March 30 by Vergos auctioneers includes some of the most well-known names in Greek art of the late 19th and 20th century. Among the highlights are «Greek History» (estimated at -300,000–400,000) an allegorical work by Constantinos Parthenis. The painting’s provenance is the collection of the artist’s son. The late 19th century painter Constantinos Volanakis, a favorite in auctions of Greek art, is represented by one of his typical seascapes. «Admiral Miaoulis» (est. -40,000–60,000) by Nikos Engonopoulos combines a surrealist style with elements taken from Byzantine icon painting. Among the best pieces auctioneers also place «Erotic Angel» (-30,000–40,000) by Yiannis Gaitis. The auction will also include works by some living contemporary artists. An urban scene by Chronis Botsoglou shows a different side to the work of an artist mostly known for his portraits. Works by Niki Kanagini, Christos Karas and Kyriakos Mortarakos will also be up for sale. The auction will be held at 6.30 p.m. at the Zappeion Hall, March 30. A four-day preview of the works begins March 26. Info: Petros Vergos auctioneers (25 Nikis, 210.331.8582) or www.vergosauctions.gr.
