Hoping for peace in the Middle East

Given the nightmarish atmosphere at the besieged Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the scheduled opening date of the Alexandria Library on April 23 seems sure to be postponed until a more peaceful moment. The organizers are waiting to see the outcome of the situation in the Middle East before making their decision, but preparations continue. The Egyptian ambassador to Greece, Dr Magda Shahin, organized an Egyptian cultural evening at the War Museum, where Fotis Constantinidis’s documentary on the Alexandria Library had its first screening. UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyianni spoke of the importance of reviving the library, and expressed her hopes that its opening would mark the beginning of a new phase in the Middle East.
