The Harilaos Trikoupis Bridge
The bridge linking the western Peloponnese with northern Greece, until now simply known as the Rio-Antirio bridge, was officially «baptized» yesterday with the name of the 19th century statesman Harilaos Trikoupis (1832-1897), who was from nearby Messolongi. President Karolos Papoulias officiated at the ceremony, which took place at a monument near the bridge’s tollgates. The event was under the aegis of the Environment and Public Works Ministry and Gefyra SA, and included the unveiling of a plaque from the International Federation for Structural Concrete and the International Association for Building and Structural Engineering (IABSE).
