Awards and presentations

The winners of the new Literary Translation Awards are to be announced at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at the French Institute. The awards are a joint effort involving the European Translation Center (EKEMEL) and foreign institutes in Athens – the British Council, Goethe Institute, Cervantes Institute and Italian Cultural Institute. Five translators into Greek from English, French, German, Spanish and Italian will win 3,000 euros apiece and the right to stay for one month at the House of Literature on Paros. The winner will be chosen from the following short list. For translation from English: Serafim Velentzas, Athina Dimitriadou and Tonia Kovalenko. From French: Maria Efstathiadi, Sotiris Liontos and Giorgos Xenarios. From German: Alexandros Isaris, Yiannis Kallifatidis and Ioanna Meitani. From Spanish: Dimitris Kalokyris, Ismini Kansi and Achilleas Kyriakidis. From Italian: Anna Papastavrou, Panayiotis Skondras and Maria Spyridopoulou. Poetry The Hellenic-American Union (22 Massalias, tel 210.368.0047) presents «The Lion’s Gate,» a collection of poetry published by Truman State University Press today at 8.30 p.m. The collection comprises selected works by Titos Patrikios, translated by Christopher Bakken and Roula Konsolaki. Poet and professor of American literature at the University of Athens Liana Sakelliou and poet and essayist Anastassis Vistonitis will present the book. The poet and translators will also be present. Meet the author Best-selling novelist Nikos Themelis will meet readers and sign copies of his latest book «One Life, Two Lives» (published by Kedros) at 12.20 p.m. this Saturday at the Polyedro bookstore (147 Kanakari, Patras, tel 2610.226030). Launch Kastaniotis Publishers and the Lykovrissi Municipality Cultural Center present Dimitris Tsatsos’s book «The Great Decline» at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20.
