Women’s International Peace Movement

The annual board meeting of the Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement met in Cairo on June 18, when the group’s general assembly was also held. The movement’s founder and president, Suzanne Mubarak, briefed the members on the movement’s initiatives for culture, peace, the protection of women and children from trafficking, protection and security for people in war zones, and raising awareness regarding international humanitarian law. She reported the establishment of a Peace Research Institute based in the Alexandria library and emphasized the contribution of board member and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyianni, who was re-elected along with Queen Sabeeka of Bahrain, Princess Basma Bint Talal of Jordan and the director of the Alexandria Library Dr Ismail Serageldin. Among the new board members are Virgin Group founder Richard Branson and Nobel Peace Prize winner for 2004, Wangare Maathai. Suzanne Mubarak will visit Athens to give a lecture titled «Lay the Foundations for Peace: Support Development» on July 6, at 6 p.m. at the National Gallery. This coming Thursday Vardinoyianni is holding a press conference on the occasion of a concert by Egyptian singer Fairuz at the Herod Atticus.
