The Vyronas Festival is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with more top-class tunes and theater, starting next week

he annual Vyronas Festival is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary with yet more concerts and theater performances. From August 22 to September 30, the Vrachon Theater will host a variety of events from different styles of Greek music to ancient Greek tragedy. This year’s event will kick off with the «Stavros tou Notou» concert by Thanos Mikroutsikos, Manolis Mitsias and Yiannis Koutras, who will also be joined by singer Rita Antonopoulou. The show will feature composer Mikroutsikos’s work on poetry by Nikos Kavvadias and other of his hits, as well as highlights from the career of Mitsias, who recently collaborated with Mikroutsikos and Alkis Alkaios on «Yperocha Monachoi» (Wonderfully Alone). The festival will continue with performances on a daily basis. These will include Bost’s comedy «Medea,» directed by Stamatis Fassoulis, on August 23, which stars Elissavet Constantinidou and Zeta Makrypoulia. On August 27, the Greek National Theater will stage Jean Racine’s tragedy «Andromache,» directed by Dimitris Mavrikios and starring Lydia Fotopoulou, Christos Loulis, Nikos Karathanos and Maria Kehayioglou. The program will continue with a concert of Greek music with a comic twist by Heimerini Kolymvites on August 28 and then yet more music with Dimitris Zervoudakis the following day. The Municipal Regional Theater of Larissa production of Euripides’ tragedy «Iphigenia at Aulis,» directed by Sotiris Hadzakis and starring Tamila Koulieva, Filareti Komninou, Alexandros Mylonas and Giorgos Chryssostomou, will go on stage on August 30. September will make a powerful start with traditional Cretan music from Hainides on the 3rd. The following day, September 4, the exhibition «The Light of the Rocks – Minos Volanakis» will go on display. The tribute to acclaimed director Volanakis will comprise photographs and recorded extracts from lectures he gave around the country. Another Greek National Theater production, that of Sophocles’ tragedy «Electra,» will be performed on September 5. The play is directed by distinguished German director Peter Stein and features actors Yiannis Fertis, Karyofyllia Karabeti, Kora Karvouni, Lazaros Georgakopoulos, Apostolis Totsikas and others. A tribute to songwriter Manos Loizos by acclaimed veteran vocalist Haris Alexiou will follow the next day and the festival will continue to the end of the month.
