Easter candles at DESTE store
The art of the lambada (Easter candle) is reaching new heights again this year, as a number of artists propose their signature designs. At the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art, for instance, various artists present original designs for candles and festive decorations, to be sold exclusively at the foundation’s Artstore. Melita Vernardaki creates combinations of painted copper, inspired by Greek themes, while Sofia Karmaniola suggests pop themes with flowers, hearts and ladybirds, a theme also taken up by Marili Lavranou, who uses multicolored felt mixed with silk ribbons and beads for the girls. Boys get special treatment too, with their metal boats, blue beads and blue and white candles. Vicky Panga, on the other hand, uses glamorous sequins, feathers, ribbon, seashells, dried flowers, ladybirds and fish, all on colorful candles, while she also adds objects such as necklaces and hair pins. With flower power one of the season’s fashion themes, Nina Papaioannou places camelias, roses and orchids, among others, on monochrome candles, while Ioanna Papanikolaou uses beads to make butterflies and cherries for her baby boy and baby girl collection. Katerina Plioni makes fish, hearts, human figures and crosses using wire, while adding colorful fibers. Sugar Line Productions continues in its habitual «plastic is fantastic» theme, playing with plastic flowers on minimalist candles, while Giorgos Syrigas is off to his postmodern garden with flowers and paper tape. Meanwhile, Katerina Tsiganou offers hip candles in orange, purple and red, with beads and flowers in papier-mache. Also on display at the Artstore are gifts and accessories such as slippers and knitted bags embracing the waistline, complete with mobile phone holsters.
