Dance, music and theater galore at the relaunched Volos International Festival

Rich, colorful and festive, the Volos International Festival is continuing with even more interesting performances. Taking place at various venues throughout the city, the festival kicked off with Mikis Theodorakis’s «Zorba» ballet by the Sofia National Theater Ballet, followed by shows by Austrian performance group Liquid Loft and American artist Wolfe Bowart. The program continues with Dominique Boivin’s lyrical site-specific dance performance «Transports exceptionnels,» more dance by Boivin and Pascale Houbin, a spectacle by the Piesn Kozla group, theater by the local Erineos company and a music performance. «Transports exceptionnels,» Boivin’s striking site-specific duet for a dancer and an excavator with recorded arias sung by Maria Callas, will be staged at Volos Beach at 1 p.m. today and tomorrow. Featuring dancer Philippe Priasso, the production was the greatest success of this year’s International Kalamata Dance Festival. Boivin, co-founder of the Beau Geste company, will then join forces with Pascale Houbin, founder of the Non de Nom dance company, to cast a poetic look on the medieval love story of Heloise and Abelard in «Bonte Divine,» which will be performed at the Municipal Theater tomorrow. On its first visit to Greece, Poland’s Piesn Kozla group will present a heavily charged ritualistic show with music, recitation and movement, «Lacrimosa,» at the Old Power Plant Theater on January 3 and 4. The Volos-based Irineos theater company will stage «Imagine,» a compilation of texts by Alexandros Papadiamantis, George Seferis and other Greek writers at the Municipal Theater on January 16. The production is directed by Yiannis Trantas, with music by Petros Dourdoumbakis. The festival will close on January 19 and 20 with a musical journey around the world by the ensemble of Nikos Parthenis and Zafeiris Koukousselis, at the Old Power Plant Theater. The show will be repeated on January 26 and 27 independently. Information/tickets: tel 24210.53604.
