Woolf’s Orlando at Bios

Film buffs will no doubt remember the excellent adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel «Orlando.» Adapted and directed by Sally Potter, the film starred Tilda Swinton as Orlando, a mysterious, hermaphrodite being that travels through space and time. That is the play that the Omicron 2 theater company is taking to the main stage of Bios, directed by Stavros Tsakiris and starring Marianthi Sondaki in the title role. Woolf’s play was also adapted for the theater by novelist Darryl Pinckney and director Robert Wilson and staged in Berlin’s Schaubuhne with Jutta Lampe as Orlando. In 1993, the same director staged the same adaptation in Paris, with Isabelle Hyppert, and the production at Bios is based on the same script. A person, who is neither man nor woman, meets the spectators and tells them, in a confidential tone, the strange story of Orlando throughout the centuries. Orlando changes costumes, seasons, places and sex. Everything around Orlando is just an environment that keeps changing without affecting the lonely hero. Bios, 84 Pireos, tel 210.342.5335. On stage Fridays to Tuesdays at 9.15 p.m.
