Collaboration of music and literature celebrated
Marking 10 years of a fruitful convergence of contemporary music and literature, the Orchestra of Colors and the Melina Mercouri Foundation (9-11 Polygnotou, Plaka) begin a 10-night tribute tonight to their lasting collaboration at the foundation’s premises in the capital’s Plaka district. Over the 10-year period, 43 original compositions have been written to accompany Greek and foreign literature, while a total of 32 Greek novelists and poets saw their work fused with music. The commemorative event will be held over a a 10-night series on Mondays, beginning tonight. An eight-member team – Ioulita Iliopoulou, the event’s curator, Yiannis Fertis, Spyros Sakkas, Gerasimos Gennatas, Dimosthenis Papadopoulos, Themis Bazaka, Dimitris Kataleifos and Paschalis Tsarouchas – will devote evenings to recitals of works by Greek writers, accompanied by the Orchestra of Colors. The series starts with «Nostalgos» by Alexandros Papadiamantis, tonight (8.30 p.m.), and continues with: 3/3 – «Meta ton charaktiristiko icho» by Achilleas Kyriakidis; 17/3 – «Genethlios imera tis etairas Pasifilis» by Michalis Kopidakis; 31/3 – «Alazoneia» by Alexis Panselinos; 7/4 – «Fygi» by Soti Triandafyllou; 14/4 – «I gynaika pou petaei» by Menis Koumandareas; 21/4 – «Li» by Nikos Kavvadias; 5/5 – «Anazitisi» by Nikos Themelis; 24/3 – «I trisevgeni i ta tria kitra» (popular fables); 12/5 – contemporary Greek poetry. Organizers are contemplating a CD release documenting these performances.
