Crete entices summer art shows

Three interesting exhibitions will mark the dynamic start by the Center for Contemporary Artistic Creation in Rethymnon, Crete, to this summer season, all of which are scheduled to open on Friday. The first, «Afi ston kyklo» (Touch the circle), is an artistic proposal by artists who belong to the «Afi» (Touch) group, and will take place at the Ibrahim Khan mosque in the Fortezza. In the exhibit, eight columns will be arranged in a circle within the mosque. Each column will be made of a material that will be chosen by the artists Maria Grigoriou, Inger Carlsson, Judith Allen Efstathiou, Corinna Koutouzi, Despina Pandazopoulou, Yiannis Papadopoulos and Theodora Chorafa. The second exhibition, «To vavagio tis galinis» (The wreckage of tranquillity), is a solo show by artist Maria Loizidou and will take place on the Fortezza’s artillery ground, while the arts center Eight, (8 Heimarras St) will host «Red Earth,» a highly successful exhibition which was presented at the Fyrogia Monastery on Sifnos last summer. Meanwhile, artists Giorgos Gyparakis, Dimitris Zouroudis, Lizzy Callika, Popi Krouska, Haris Kondosfyris, Maria Loizidou, Eleni Lyra, Yiannis Michas, Angelos Skourtis and Pandelis Handris are looking into the possibility of transporting the show, which took place in situ, to a suitable exhibition area. The last show, «People, Faces, Figures,» will take place at the L. Kanakakis Municipal Gallery as well as the Center for Contemporary Artistic Creation (5 Heimarras St). The exhibition is dedicated to the human figure, as seen through the works of Greek 20th-century artists, such as Nikolaos Gyzis and Aspasios Haronitakis. The exhibition’s core consists of the city of Rethymnon’s permanent works, which will be complemented by paintings loaned by the National Gallery, various collectors and some of the artists themselves. On display, among other works, will be paintings by Michalis Arfaras, Yiannis Gaitis, Pericles Goulakos, Theophilos, Makis Theofilaktopoulos, Nikiforos Lytras, Yiannis Moralis, Giorgos Mavroidis, Dimitris Mytaras, Chryssa Romanou, Giorgos Rorris, Yiannis Tsarouchis, Costas Tsoklis, Giorgos Hadzimichalis and Yiannis Psychopaidis.
