ou probably remember «Mamma Mia,» the great Abba hit from the 1970s. For a long time this particular tune has been the inspiration for a production which goes by the same name, a performance which has met with extraordinary success all over the globe. Following extensive advertising on local billboards, press announcements and television appearances by cast members, «Mamma Mia!» opens in Athens tomorrow with a series of performances at the Badminton Theater. A family musical whose plot takes place on a Greek island, «Mamma Mia!» tells the story of an upcoming wedding. A bride-to-be asks her mother which of her three past lovers is her true father. It all culminates in a spectacular party which takes place at the end of the musical and includes dear friends – old and new – fathers, grooms, wedding guests, tourists, Greeks and foreigners, island folk and members of the audience. The popular musical unfolds through a medley of Abba hits: at times moving, at times joyful and sometimes funny to the point of tears, according to how they are used in the plot. Besides the stage version, the silver screen version of «Mamma Mia!» is expected later this year, starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth. The Badminton Theater is situated at the Goudi military park (tel 211.108.6024). Tickets can be purchased at Virgin Megastores, on tel 210.884.0600 and online, at www.ticketnet.gr.
